A grim milestone was reached last Wednesday:  100,000 deaths in the United States due to the coronavirus. We knew this was coming. As of today, the number of virus-related deaths is over 105,000.

Without more drama, here is a breakdown of that number in percentages of interest to senior citizens as extrapolated from CDC data:

Percentages of deaths based on age:

  • 0-17…………………………….0.06%
  • 18-44…………………………….3.9%
  • 45-64…………………………..22.4%
  • 65-74…………………………..24.9%
  • 75+……………………………..48.7%

Percentages of deaths based on sex:

  •     Male…………………………62%
  •     Female……………………..38%

Percentages of deaths based on location:

  •     California………………………..6.9%
  •     New York………………………..8.3%
  •     Florida…………………………….6.4%
  •     Washington…………………….1.4%
  •     Texas……………………………….4.1%
  •     Arkansas………………………..0.06%

Percentages of deaths based on pre-existing conditions in confirmed cases:

  •     Cardiovascular Disease……………………..13.2%
  •     Diabetes………………………………………………9.2%
  •     Chronic Respiratory Disease………………..8.0%
  •     Hypertension……………………………………….8.4%
  •     Cancer………………………………………………….7.6%

Numbers for your community may differ from these as a whole for the U.S.

It’s true that actual coronavirus deaths have been underreported or incorrectly reported. Regardless, these numbers are a fairly good representation of the breakdowns even if there are some differences in your local communities.

It’s up to each of us to work hard to not be included in these statistics. We can do it.

Be safe and take care. And don’t get lax now, when the restlessness of staying cooped up is overwhelming.
